5 Ways Work-At-Home Entrepreneurs Can Stay Motivated and Productive

1. Check emails once per day--twice at most.

Checking email frequently can cause you to get side-tracked with things that may not be all that important. Checking once a day, preferably in the morning, will allow you to tackle any important tasks that may arise from emails or at least add them to your to-do list so that you can move on to the day's goals. If you want, you can end the day with checking your email as well. But keep it to a minimum.

2. Turn off your phone.

I know, I know. That's a hard one. But listen, you don't have to turn it off for the entire day. Just block off an hour or two during which you turn it off. You'll be surprised how much more productive you are when you don't have to worry about answering your phone. Some of you may be tempted to just silence your phone, but that probably won't work. Chances are, you'll still be checking calls when the screen begins to flash even if the ringer is off.

It's okay. Let it go for an hour or so. I promise you the world won't end if you miss a few calls. Remember, if they leave a message, you can always return the call. The same applies for text messages.

*Note: Let your loved ones know that your phone will be off certain times of the day and be sure you have given your kid(s)'s school(s) an alternate number for emergencies.

3. If you are going to answer the phone, screen your calls wisely.

If you know someone who constantly spews negativity, do not talk to them while you are trying to work. Self-doubt is already something that loves to creep into your mind you're an entrepreneur. Don’t feed it with outside negativity.

4. Schedule your day or week in advance.

I use Google Calendar to organize my work weeks/days, adding tasks as I need to. My calendar is linked to my cell phone so I get reminders on there as well as in my email inbox, and if you keep your calendar open in your browser, it will remind you of tasks, interrupting your Internet activity.

You don't have to use Google Calendar, but you do need to formulate a way to organize your work week/day.

5. Take frequent breaks.

A rested mind is a more productive mind. Even if you’re really into the flow of things, take a break at least every hour. Stretch your legs. Walk outside. Listen to some music. And then get back to it!
